The 7 Scriptural Dyads

Seven Minor Prophetic Fulfillments

Each pairing card below unites New Testament fulfillment with Old Testament typology across a central gold cleaving rule. Verbatim RSV2CE citations demonstrate the coherent architectural plan of Sacred Scripture.

Pairing 10AThe Nativity Geography

Ruler from Bethlehem — Micah 5:2 & Matthew 2:1–6

New Testament

The Fulfillment

"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?' ... [The chief priests and scribes answered,] 'In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'"
Matthew 2:1–2, 5–6 (RSV2CE)
Old Testament

The Prophecy

"But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days."
Micah 5:2 (RSV2CE)

Micah identifies the precise, humble village of David's birthplace seven centuries before the Roman census brought Mary and Joseph to Judea, unveiling that Israel's everlasting ruler would spring from ancient obscurity.

Pairing 10BThe Paschal Mystery

The Sign of Jonah — Jonah 1:17 & Matthew 12:38–41

New Testament

The Fulfillment

"Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, 'Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.' But he answered them, 'An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.'"
Matthew 12:38–40 (RSV2CE)
Old Testament

The Prophecy

"And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."
Jonah 1:17 (RSV2CE)

Jesus Himself authoritatively claims Jonah's three-day subterranean burial and bodily deliverance as the singular historical typology validating His Resurrection from the tomb.

Pairing 10CThe New Exodus

Out of Egypt My Son — Hosea 11:1 & Matthew 2:13–15

New Testament

The Fulfillment

"And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, 'Out of Egypt have I called my son.'"
Matthew 2:14–15 (RSV2CE)
Old Testament

The Prophecy

"When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son."
Hosea 11:1 (RSV2CE)

As Israel was delivered from Pharaoh's slaughter into the wilderness, so the true and spotless Son of God emerges from Egyptian sanctuary after Herod's cruelty to institute the New Exodus.

Pairing 10DThe Messianic Entry

Humble King on a Colt — Zechariah 9:9 & Matthew 21:1–9

New Testament

The Fulfillment

"This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 'Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of an ass.' The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them... and the crowds that went before him and that followed him shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David!'"
Matthew 21:4–6, 9 (RSV2CE)
Old Testament

The Prophecy

"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on an ass, on a colt the foal of an ass."
Zechariah 9:9 (RSV2CE)

Zechariah's vision forbids a militaristic conqueror riding a warhorse; Christ's Palm Sunday entrance deliberately activates this prophecy of an unassuming, meek King bringing salvation to Zion.

Pairing 10EThe Betrayal Price

Thirty Pieces of Silver — Zechariah 11:12–13 & Matthew 26:14–15; 27:3–7

New Testament

The Fulfillment

"Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, 'What will you give me if I deliver him to you?' And they paid him thirty pieces of silver... And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed... But the chief priests... took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in."
Matthew 26:14–15; 27:5, 7 (RSV2CE)
Old Testament

The Prophecy

"Then I said to them, 'If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.' And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. Then the Lord said to me, 'Cast it into the treasury'—the lordly price at which I was paid off by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and cast them into the treasury in the house of the Lord."
Zechariah 11:12–13 (RSV2CE)

The exact valuation of a gored slave under the Mosaic Law is weighed out for the Shepherd of Israel, hurled into the sanctuary, and redirected to purchase the potter's field in strict fulfillment of Zechariah.

Pairing 10FThe Pierced Savior

Looking on Him Whom They Pierced — Zechariah 12:10 & John 19:34–37

New Testament

The Fulfillment

"But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water... For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, 'Not a bone of him shall be broken.' And again another scripture says, 'They shall look on him whom they have pierced.'"
John 19:34, 36–37 (RSV2CE)
Old Testament

The Prophecy

"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of compassion and supplication, so that, when they look on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a first-born."
Zechariah 12:10 (RSV2CE)

At Golgotha, the Roman spear pierces the side of Jesus, opening the fountain of blood and water for the sacramental birth of the Catholic Church and fulfilling Zechariah's solemn oracle of divine compunction.

Pairing 10GThe Final Forerunner

The Messenger of the Covenant — Malachi 3:1 & Mark 1:1–4

New Testament

The Fulfillment

"The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight'—John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins."
Mark 1:1–4 (RSV2CE)
Old Testament

The Prophecy

"Behold, I send my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts."
Malachi 3:1 (RSV2CE)

The very last prophet of the Old Testament foretells the voice of John the Baptist preparing the way for the Lord's arrival in His temple, completing the 70th biblical typology of salvation history.
